Homemade Pill Pockets
When my dog, Karmen, was about 6 years old she began showing signs of having sore hips after long walks or a weekend at the cottage. In Karmen’s older age her hips and joints have begun to bother her more and more. I started her on a hips & joint supplement, which she now takes twice a day to help with her mobility. Unfortunately, as beneficial as the supplements are, Karmen hatesssss how they taste. (In all fairness, they do smell quite awful 😛 ).
I was buying pill pockets to help mask the taste and they do work wonders. I stuck with buying pill pockets for the longest time (buying A LOT), but, the largest size pocket available was still too small for her large pills. I found myself flying through these small bags and decided to look for a healthier (and maybe even cheaper) alternative.
AT LAST, a healthy, affordable, delicious pill pocket recipe. Now Karmen eats her pills without any hesitation what so ever. She actually gets excited when she sees I’m getting her pill pockets ready – they must be reallllly good! 🙂
Healthy Pill Pocket Recipe:
1 cup – Goats Milk (or reg. milk)
1 cup – Natural Peanut Butter (or chunky peanut butter)
1 tsp – cinnamon
2 cups – Gluten Free Flour ( or reg. flour)
Directions:
Blend ingredients together and shape into pocket shapes of desired size. Store in fridge or freezer.
This recipe makes 60+ large pill pockets. Double or half the recipe by using the ratio 1:1:2:1.
You can freeze pill pockets if you make too many. I like to make a big batch about once a month and divide them up into baggies for each week.
